Did you know that using AOL and/or Outlook is not HIPAA compliant? The main thing is the incryption or lack of it that makes those two mail clients not the best choice for transmitting confidential information.

You need at least 128 bit incryption and going 256 bit is even better. Talk to your IT manager and find out about encrypting your data before it is transmitted over the cable or air (wireless).

I was just reading a book "Cryptography for Dummies" and in the book it shows you how to set up a Digital Certificate and how to sign your Key so that you and your recipient can exchange secure emails.

I think that once you have something like that setup than it is okay by HIPAA.

For most health care admins and providers it will be complicated unless you have an IT staff.
